The third round of the 2016 Red Bull Global Rallycross season took places this weekend in Dallas, Texas. The weekend began with a massive amount of rain, so much rain that there were grumblings around the pits of the possibility of canceling some of the heats. Luckily, that didn’t happen and both days we able to go off without a hitch.
This weekend’s event took place at Fair Park, home of the Cotton Bowl and Texas State Fair. The course that the men and women of Red Bull GRC put together for the weekend was almost the polar opposite of the track we saw at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park two weeks ago. While the Phoenix round favored fast cars and fast drivers featuring long straightaways where cars were able to reach their top speed and wide open, flowing corners, the track in Dallas was narrow with very few straightaways and featured tight technical corners. Drivers had to be on their toes and ready for some serious battles.
Conner Martell and the DirtFish team went into Dallas full-force, looking for a repeat of the success in Phoenix, however that unfortunately wasn’t the case. Plagued with parts on the car breaking and bending, Conner and the team felt like they were playing catch-up all weekend. Even with a little bit of bad luck, Conner was able to consistently lay down some of the fastest lap times in the Lites class. On Saturday, he had to take part in the Last Chance Qualifier to obtain a spot in the final. Just like we saw in Phoenix, he was able to win the LCQ by a large margin, moving him into P7 at the start of the final. The final started out well, with Conner slowly working his way through the field until lap 5 when one of the driveshafts in the transfer case snapped in half. From then on, his job was to get the car across the finish line.
This weekend was the second race that DirtFish Motorsports has partnered with Axios modular systems but ECCO safety group. Axios produces top of the line modular high performance LED light bar systems for safety and industrial vehicles. We are proud to partner with them for a second season and thank them for their support throughout the 2016 season.
Although the weekend didn’t produce the results Conner and the DirtFish team were hoping for, Conner is still currently sitting 2nd in the overall championship points… Which is what really matters!
We’ll be preparing over the next 2 weeks for the next two races in Daytona, Florida. Until then, check out a few of our favorite photos from Dallas.
