This weekend was all about consistency for Conner Martell and the DirtFish team in Daytona. Since this race was a double header, it was key for Conner to drive smart and minimize the amount of damage on the car while also not exhausting himself. Saturday started out with him winning the Last Chance Qualifier by a large margin, but unfortunately he incurred a penalty in the process, pushing him back a position on the starting grid during the final. One of Conner’s greatest strengths as a driver is the fact that he is able to still drive well and hit his lines under pressure of having to fight from the back. He did just that in the final, moving from P7 at the start all the way up to 4th place at the finish.
The following day went even better for Conner; qualifying well and having finished top in the heat races meant he didn’t have to spend an extra four laps on course for the LCQ. While P5 isn’t an ideal starting position in Daytona, Conner didn’t let that affect him. He drove a smart ten-lap race, laying down consistent times and staying on the bumper of Alejo Fernandez. Alejo made a mistake through one of the corners, giving Conner the opportunity to move up one position, where he stayed for the remaining laps, finishing the race in 4th place.
Conner had this to say: “This weekend went really well for us. We had a little bad luck Friday and Saturday, but we were able to pull off a fourth on Saturday, and we pulled off another fourth on Sunday. It’s great that we are being consistent and that’s exactly what we need to do to win championships. We’re heading into North Carolina with confidence, and we’re going to be pushing it pretty hard there.”
We would like to thank our sponsors, Axio by ECCO for their continued support this weekend! Having a company that values creating quality products as much as we do is a great addition to the DirtFish Motorsports team, and we are proud to have their name on the car.
